August

One of the fun opportunities Ana gets working on the United Way campaign is the social stuff she does with her fellow chairpeople and the UW guys, Ray and Jeff. Late one Friday afternoon, she and Joyce joined the team at a mini-golf course and played 18 holes. Joyce did so well (okay, Ana did fudge a little while keeping score!) that she beat her mom by one point AND made par! Ray had the scorecard framed and presented it to Ana at a later campaign committee meeting.

For most of the last ten years, Joyce has been famous for her LOOONG blond hair. Well this was the year that she felt she could part with what was commonly known as 'the leash' since Ana would use it to hang onto her in a crowd. They started out small, by cutting off about 8 inches of frazzle-ends. Then after she had bugged Ana about getting another haircut for about a month, they shortened it by a foot and a half! Both pieces of hair have been saved for posterity. Joyce loved the new length so much, she wasn't seen without a comb in her hands for about a week! So much for separation anxiety.

Just before the summer ended, sister Janet (Aunt BooBoo to Joyce) planned a trip to Marine World with Joyce. She was supposed to go with friends from work, but that plan was foiled, and she took Ana along, and Ana asked Gina's god-daughter Anna to come along to keep Joyce company. The weather was perfect, the day was long and full of fun. What a way to end the summer. (TOP)

September

September means Labor Day and the beginning of school. This is Joyce's last year at the elementary school. Next year she moves to the new Junior High/High School campus. It's going to be quite a commute, but the Lord will provide, we can rest assured.

Joyce sparked a new interest when Ana took her to her first car show in Berkeley. Their friend Woody (no, NOT from Toy Story!) had his Cobra on show there, and they went up to see his and the other cars there. Ana was in seventh heaven when one of the first cars she saw was a boat-tailed Auburn. This brought back memories for her of a trip she made in college in 1979 to the Auburn/Cord/Deusenberg Car Museum in Auburn, Indiana. Back in the days when they knew how to build cars! Then Joyce was honored with the privilege of riding home in the Cobra with Woody. Ana had to settle for driving her own car home, boo hoo. This picture was snapped by Ana as the two cars raced side by side down the highway at about 70 miles an hour. If it had been parked it couldn't have been a better shot!

One of the final activities of the United Way campaign this year was the fund- and awareness-raising Agency Faire/Talent Show/Auction. Since there were no other volunteers stepping forward, Ana once again took on yet more activities, and said she would be the MC for the Talent/Auction part of the day. Despite the heat of the day, the activities did raise a great deal of money, hopefully some awareness, and those on stage had a great time. (TOP)
